Hollywood Tilting to Hillary?

posted by marc on 06/08/2007 @ 1:54pm

After an early tabloid romance with Barack Obama, it now looks like the Hollywood Glitterati might be ready for a steady date with Hillary. The L.A. Times reports that Senator Clinton is Tinsel Town's new favorite baby -- picking up a cool $1.1 million in Hollywood cash during one Left Coast visit last week.

The Times report says the pro-Clinton buzz is all around town:

In fact, it's become so strong that Steven Spielberg, once considered a solid supporter of Illinois Democrat Obama, is now believed to be leaning in favor of Clinton, according to longtime industry politicos. (Spielberg's political spokesman, Andy Spahn, was coy this week when asked about Spielberg's political thinking. "We have nothing to announce," Spahn said, but stay tuned.)

But behind the scenes, the signs are pretty clear. Last week, Clinton cruised through town raising a cool $1.1 million in one day. At a celebrity-studded reception at News Corp. President Peter Chernin's house -- an event co-hosted by Spielberg and television financier Haim Saban -- Clinton brought in $850,000. (Chernin's boss, Rupert Murdoch, currently bidding to take over the Wall Street Journal, is a political conservative who sometimes gives to Democratic candidates.) Even super-agent Ari Emanuel, who is one of Obama's top industry supporters, wrote a check to Clinton.

Later, the junior senator from New York went to director Brett Ratner's house, where she raised $250,000 at the event held in Ratner's downstairs disco. A variety of young Hollywood hipsters ponied up, including will.i.am, Eric Dane, Rebecca Gayheart, Alex Avant and Quincy Jones (the latter not exactly young but forever hip).

Later this month, we'll see if the trend holds. All three top tier Democratic candidates are scheduled to make passes through Hollywood over the next two weeks.

  1. Little wonder these celluloid clowns would dump B.O. and support Comrade Clinton. They all have so much money the economic shambles the country would be in as a result of her policies would never effect them.

"News Corp"?..."Rupert Murdoch"?...hey, isn't there some news network under the blanket of the News Corp corporation, owned by that Murdoch guy?

heheh (sorry, little dig at FRANKGRITS' object of affection!)

  9. Frank,

I'm not angry. Hillary is just part of the problem not the solution. She wants to be President and is playing the game.

But since she's so corporate friendly, what I don't get is why the right wing scream machine is so scared of her.

Well, WILL...what does "turns out well" mean? What will be the comparison? Roosevelt? Kennedy?

And is "turns out well", she cuts the deficit, but fails to inact universal health care? Does it mean low unemployment, but she keeps NAFTA, GATT, and the WTO in place and furthers globalism? Does it mean the "slow withdrawal" plan from Iraq, rather than Edwards quicker one? Does it mean no pressure on Israel to compromise with Hamas and the Palestinian Authority?

Please don't answer specifically or directly (as usual)...for if you do, you're just going to give MORE ammo to the LEFT-wingers who don't like Her Nibs and they're going to come after you even STRONGER than they do FRANKGRITS (another HRC fan) on "Hillary the sell-out", "Hillary the corporatist", "Hillary the phoney".

Bury yourself too deeply in Hillary Fan Boy status, WILL....and it won't be MAASCH that gives you a hard time. Hell, read what "The Nation" writers have been saying about her!

Next time they post something negative about her....leap to her defense....or just go after the "hamsters" and play your little chickens**t game so as to not ruffle any feathers on the Left.

Everyone is going to have to decide for themselves what that means.. but regardless of the individual definitions, a sure sign of it will be hamsters all across America lying on the floor of the local piggly wiggly, headless, with gray matter and bits of skull and hair splattered all over the walls

Ok you're confused. But that's normal. Head explosions will only be observed in Hamsterland if Hillary does well. If she lives up to the hamster doom and gloom predictions, the hamsters will be jumping up and down in shear joy

Not the Left... who despite their dislike of Her Husband's Administration (welfare reform, trade, dont-ask-dont-tell)...and fear of HER ("Hillary vs Labor" by Ari Beman "The Notion")...and the fact that if she's "triangulating" that means they get screwed over as much as the Right will (maybe less)?

Ok, since you can't dazzle me with brilliance that leaves trying to baffle me with bullshit. Sorry it didn't work. None of the above has anything to do with exploding hamster heads

Of course you know the Right isn't going to become suicidal...in fact, it will energize their base and TONS of cash will pour in from a NOW-disheartened Religious Right....

Sure Hamsterland will become suicidal. After eight years of a Clinton administration that went well a reenergized hamster base will dump tons of money into massive sleaze campaigns, be ignored, dump even more money into massive sleaze campaigns, be ignored and so on and so on until the intra-cranial pressure of the average hamster noggin builds to a point where the skull liquefies and brains, skull and hair decorate the walls of the local piggly wiggly

  44. Hillary. Hmmmm... I'm not a big fan of giving life-long passes to professional politicians... Especially when special interest groups predominate their campiagn funding. Seems to me... the Bush administration got off squarely on the wrong foot chiefly because of the dependence he had on the neo-con faction that had become so entrenched in the 'game' of it all... so... what makes you think that the asses all around Hillary won't be braying in their own 'secret language'? ...which, incidently, has probably been in the works for several years... and IMHO, is not exactly 'the opposite' of the current administration...

I'm excited to see some new people in the Whitehouse... people who have cleaner political slates... people who adore the 'full on' prosperity of their entire nation, not just for their friends... people who will persue world peace through peaceful diplomatic endeavors... people who believe in the Constitution of the United States of America, and seek to realize it's ambitions rather than pervert it for 'side jobs'... People who care about the image America has around the world... People who can tell the difference between a world economy and a global empire... People who are not afraid of having press conferences without scripted questions... People who respect the Democratic Process. ttr

  46. I think Hillary would be an excellent choice to clean out corruption in Washington. Already, she has hired Alcee Hastings as her Campaign Co-Chair, and who would know corruption better than him?

Hillary Clinton's presidential campaign has tapped Rep. Alcee Hastings, a Florida Democrat, as a "national campaign co-chair," the campaign announced yesterday:

Rep. Hastings said, "When we elect the next President Clinton, this country will be a much better place for the African-American community, Floridians and all Americans." . . .

"I am delighted that Debbie and Alcee will take on leadership roles in my campaign," [Mrs.] Clinton said. "With their help, we will bring our message of change throughout Florida and across the country."

Who is Alcee Hastings? Ed Morrissey reminds us:

Hastings got appointed to the federal bench by Jimmy Carter in 1979. In less than two years, he got indicted for soliciting a bribe in an FBI sting. In 1983, he won an acquittal, but a subsequent House investigation found that he had committed perjury in that trial. The House Judiciary Committee authorized a whopping seventeen counts for impeachment against Hastings in 1988. . . .

Now Hillary has embraced Hastings, and indeed has made the former perjurer and corrupt judge as her campaign's national representative. She says that with Hastings' help, her "message of change" will get rolled across the country. The message is that the Clinton campaign has its own idea about the culture of corruption--they want to pursue it.

We're so disillusioned. We really thought the Democrats were going to be different!

  51. Hillary is actively pursuing big debts to a constituency that makes corporate America look harmless -- the Cuban American right. These bozos have made major contributions to the foreign policy disasters of the Bush administration.

There is no ideological distinction between the Rs and the Ds amongst them -- they just want broad influence over the U.S. government. And with Superman Fundraiser Menendez chairing Hillary's campaign, they're on track to maintain it.
