Labor Day at the RNC

posted by Christopher Hayes on 09/02/2008 @ 5:16pm

I spent yesterday trying to celebrate the struggles of working people while still covering the RNC. An impossible task, you say? Well, tried. My dispatch can be found here.

You made me laugh. I'm still trying to determine whether you're delusional or just plain stupid.

  2. Nice article, Christopher...

I have a problem with it's premise, however...

With NAFTA still in full swing, and US companies needing little encouragement to ship jobs across the hemisphere and overseas... a strong labor movement will hasten the departure of jobs by making the pay issue too constrictive for 'in country' manufacturing... leading, unfortunately... to armloads of cheap 'not very excellent stuff' that has a life expectancy of about three weeks.

    This is basic economics.

I'm afraid we're going to have to legislate our way out of this one before we can get labor the dignity it deserves.

Labor needed government protection... finally got it... and then something 'ugly' happened to the Unions and they got thuggish and insensitive to honest 'bottom line' concerns... and then the anti labor legislation started to 'trickle down' steadily.

The pride a worker takes from making high quality goods and offering first rate services... should be his best assurance of job security and decent pay... but succeeds in doing so only when the management shares these values.

If we want middle class America to prosper, we must think for ourselves, put investment in America first, and put the 'firewalls' on medium or high.
